New York, New York, I want to wake up in a city
that never sleeps… and just like that famous song, I barely slept on my last night in New York on a Tuesday night as I had to see at least a few speakeasy bars before leaving. Boy oh boy did Attaboy not disappoint!

How to find it

  • Look for the tailor alterations storefront and sign ‘Attaboy line starts here’.
  • Be mindful they do not take reservations, you need to show up and put your name and number down after pressing the doorbell.

My thoughts on the cocktails

  • This bar has no menu and only provides recommendations and custom made cocktails by the bartender based on what flavours you describe as liking. This is a massive green flag. The best bartenders should operate in this way.
  • My first drink I asked for fruity but peaty (smoky) flavours without much bitterness. I was recommended one of my favourites, an old fashioned Manhattan made with Laphroaig 10 year old whisky and some apple honey flavours I believe. The perfect balance between peaty and fruity, very delicious!
  • My second cocktail, I asked for something with vanilla and cinnamon flavours on a Tequila base spirit. A ‘Tequila Sidecar’ cocktail made of brandy, orange liqueur, lemon juice, cinnamon and vanilla hit all the flavour notes I had described.

The ambience

  • I got lucky to get in on a so called ‘quiet’ Tuesday night. Nothing is ever quiet in NYC, which I love! But if you wanted to try on a weekend, save time by putting your name down and having dinner close by while waiting.
  • It is a very narrow and small venue, however the hostess and bartenders are very professional, friendly and the vibe inside is electric. I managed to meet a few local New Yorkers while sitting at the bar.
  • Don’t go here with large groups, small groups of up to 6 (smaller the group, quicker a seat will become available). They have small booths or you can sit at the bar.
  • It is a place you would start the night or go mid way through the night. I wouldn’t be here at the end of the night as it’s not comfortable sitting in a smaller venue for too long.

Bartender

  • 5/5 for the bartenders. In all my blog posts, I always rate a cocktail ordered from the menu, but the real big test is always ordering off the menu based on the bartenders recommendation. This bar solely runs on the bartender’s recommendations and they delivered quality cocktails!

Overall thoughts are that I absolutely loved this venue. I see myself returning here with a friend or even solo again as you never know who you will meet inside.

Until next time,
